URBAN HOUSE

Derry House Urban Design

Derry House Urban Design

Where modern residential architecture, aesthetics, form and function coalesce seamlessly. This design demonstrates that an elegant contemporary house doesn’t have to be hidden away in the countryside. It can just as as easily be located in an urban or sub urban area.

Derry House Urban Design

This modern two-story residence captures the essence of contemporary architectural design, characterized by clean lines, minimalist aesthetics, and an emphasis on functionality. The house is an embodiment of modernist principles, with its rectilinear forms, flat roofs, and a deliberate absence of ornamentation, allowing the structure itself to be the focal point.

The facade is a harmonious interplay of materials, primarily rendered in smooth, white stucco, complemented by sections of darker, sleek panelling that add depth and contrast to the overall composition. The extensive use of glass in the form of large windows and glass balconies  not only ensures an abundance of natural light but also blurs the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing the feeling of openness and connectivity with the surrounding landscape.

The upper level features a prominent cantilevered balcony, bordered by transparent glass balustrades, offering unobstructed views and adding a dynamic architectural element to the design. The balcony’s overhang provides shade to the lower level, reflecting a thoughtful integration of environmental considerations into the design. Horizontal louvered screens on one section of the upper facade add a subtle yet effective detail, providing privacy and sun shading while contributing to the aesthetic rhythm of the exterior.

The entrance is both inviting and understated, with a covered porch area that creates a transitional space between the exterior and the interior. The landscaping complements the architectural style, with low brick retaining walls, neatly arranged plantings, and a paved driveway that guides the eye towards the main entrance. The strategic placement of potted plants adds a touch of greenery, softening the hard edges of the architecture and integrating natural elements into the design.

In summary, this house is a distinguished example of modern residential architecture, where form and function coalesce seamlessly. It showcases a meticulous attention to detail, materiality, and environmental responsiveness, making it a notable contribution to contemporary architectural discourse.

Derry House – Contemporary Urban Design by Usonia Architects

This striking two-storey home for Derry City exemplifies the principles of modern residential architecture, with a clean, minimalist aesthetic and a strong emphasis on functionality, sustainability, and urban integration. Designed by Usonia Architects, the house reflects a refined approach to contemporary living—where space, light, and form work in harmony.

Modern Architecture with Purpose Design by Usonia Architects

At the heart of the design is a commitment to modernist values: simple rectilinear forms, flat roofs, and a deliberate absence of decorative elements. Instead, the architecture itself becomes the statement, using proportion, materiality, and light to create visual impact.

The home’s façade is defined by a bold combination of smooth white render and dark cladding panels, offering contrast and architectural rhythm. This interplay of textures enhances the building’s form and adds visual depth to its clean-lined silhouette.

Natural Light and Connection to the Outdoors

Large-format glazing is a central feature of this Derry house design, with expansive floor-to-ceiling windows and glass balconies that bring in abundant natural light. These elements blur the line between indoor and outdoor space, maximising views and reinforcing the connection with the surrounding cityscape.

A standout feature is the cantilevered upper-level balcony, enclosed with frameless glass balustrades for uninterrupted views. This architectural move not only provides a dramatic visual gesture but also offers practical solar shading to the ground floor living areas—demonstrating how environmental performance is embedded in the design.

Urban Living with Privacy and Comfort

To enhance privacy and control solar gain, the upper façade incorporates horizontal louvre screens, adding texture while breaking up the building’s massing. These screens also introduce a dynamic quality to the exterior, changing appearance throughout the day with the shifting sun.

The front entrance is modest yet welcoming, with a sheltered porch that acts as a transitional space between the public street and private interior. This careful zoning supports the home’s urban context while offering a sense of refuge and calm.

Landscaping and Site Integration

The landscaping strategy reflects the home’s urban setting, using low brick retaining walls, structured planting beds, and a paved driveway to create a clean, coherent forecourt. Strategically placed greenery, including potted plants and border planting, softens the architecture and helps root the building in its site.
