Hillside House, Donegal

The Hillside House is designed to maximise the spectacular views over Lough Foyle. The site is located on a steep hillside that required a carefully conceived design to avoid excessive excavation and filling. The principal living spaces and master bedroom are all located facing east and south and are extensively glazed to enjoy the uninterrupted views across Lough Foyle to Limavady and Derry to the south. These rooms will be bathed in light during the morning and afternoon and provide comfortable and private spaces whether relaxing in the living room, kitchen or entertaining on the patio.

This dormer bungalow house combines functionality with elegance, making it a perfect example of modern residential architecture in Donegal. The traditional form of the house, rectangles and pitched roofs, is complemented by entirely traditional materials: slate roof and a combination of white render and natural stone walls. A contemporary twist is added with the incorporation of floor to ceiling panoramic windows and bifold doors that dominate the facade, allowing both ample natural light to flood the interior spaces and offering expansive views of the surrounding landscape; fostering a strong indoor-outdoor connection with the landscape. The patio area further extends the living space, integrating the home with the landscape, creating an inviting outdoor living space perfect for relaxation and entertaining.

Being a dormer bungalow this house has all the convenience of single-story living, with all the essential living areas located on the ground floor, while from an investment perspective the use of the roof space for additional accommodation enhances the property’s value by adding functional living space without the need for a full two-story structure. This can be particularly advantageous in areas where planning restrictions limit the height of new buildings.

In summary, this dormer bungalow offers a versatile living solution that combines the ease of bungalow living with the added bonus of extra space and light provided by the dormer design. Whether for practicality, investment, or aesthetic reasons, the dormer bungalow design stands out as a popular choice among homeowners.
