Modern Rural Home in County Donegal
Whether you’re building a dream home in County Donegal, embarking on a self-build in Derry, or renovating in Tyrone, this modern rural home in County Donegal exemplifies how Usonia Architects balances sustainability, craftsmanship, and culture in residential architecture.
House 3 Design “Teach an Fhéir Fhiáin” is a beautifully crafted single-family home nestled in the rolling landscapes of County Donegal for a site near Moville designed by Architect’s Derry studio. This new farmhouse design is a masterful interpretation of contemporary rural Irish agricultural forms, seamlessly integrating modern materials and aesthetics with functionality. Drawing inspiration from the sleek, utilitarian structures of contemporary metal barns and agricultural sheds, this design thoughtfully reimagines these elements for modern living while — capturing the local character of Donegal and echoing architectural traditions found across Donegal, Derry, and Tyrone.

At the heart of this farmhouse’s concept is a deep appreciation for the simple, honest architecture of modern agricultural buildings. The design embraces the gabled rooflines, clean lines, and durable materials that have become synonymous with contemporary rural structures. However, these familiar forms have been refined to create a contemporary dwelling that is both striking and harmonious within its surroundings. The farmhouse’s proportions are carefully considered to echo the scale of modern farm buildings, ensuring it integrates effortlessly into the rolling landscape.
Materials play a crucial role in the farmhouse’s connection to its environment. Corrugated metal, steel, and concrete—materials commonly found in modern barns and sheds are used extensively to ensure the home sits in visual dialogue with its setting. Profiled metal panels, reminiscent of agricultural storage buildings, provides durability and a contemporary aesthetic, while the interior concrete walls introduce a sense of durability and texture. The use of steel for structural elements enhances the industrial yet minimalist appeal of the design.
The siting of the farmhouse is carefully orchestrated to work with the natural topography of the land. Instead of imposing itself upon the terrain, the house nestles gently into the landscape, taking advantage of existing contours and maximizing views of the surrounding fields, woodlands, and distant hills. Thoughtfully positioned windows and openings frame these vistas, creating a continuous dialogue between the interior and exterior spaces. This connection to the land is further reinforced through an open courtyard, inspired by modern farm layouts, providing a sheltered outdoor space that fosters a sense of enclosure and community.
The farmhouse’s interior reflects the same ethos of simplicity, warmth, and functionality. High vaulted ceilings echo the openness of contemporary barns, allowing natural light to flood the living spaces. Exposed steel beams and polished concrete floors provide a tactile contrast that enhances the overall sense of authenticity. The spatial arrangement prioritizes both communal gathering areas and private retreats, ensuring a balance between sociability and solitude, much like a historical farmhouse would have that accommodated both work and rest.
Sustainability is a core principle of the design, aligning with the efficiency of modern agricultural structures. Passive solar design, natural ventilation strategies, and high-performance insulation ensure energy efficiency, while rainwater harvesting and renewable energy sources reduce the home’s environmental footprint. The use of locally sourced and recyclable materials minimizes embodied carbon, reinforcing the farmhouse’s commitment to responsible and sustainable design practices.
The surrounding landscape is embraced as an integral part of the design. Native planting, grasses and wildflowers are carefully incorporated to enhance biodiversity and support local ecosystems. The farmhouse does not seek to dominate its environment but rather to exist in harmonious cohabitation with the land, reflecting the time-honored relationship between contemporary rural architecture and nature.
By drawing inspiration from the functional beauty of modern farm buildings this design is a contemporary celebration of Irelands rural past, present and future and small contribution to it’s evolving built heritage.
